Do you have a Tween or Teen? Does your kiddo go through life joyful, easily expressing what they feel and experience? Or, is your kiddo a shy, quiet, pondering kind of person?
For either type of child, participating in an art form can help them create a new “voice,” a new way to communicate, a new way to perceive the world and people around them.
Students have been learning the art form of photography from me. In addition to being exposed to works of iconic photographers for inspiration, they learn and use composition elements and how to use their camera to give their images impact – their images “say” something. They express an emotion, document an experience, or tell a story.
One student said that she only knew how to relate to people by being angry and protectively aggressive. After learning with me, she expressed how she can now see and create images of joy and contentment. She can now feel these emotions and talk about them.
When she said this, it warmed my heart. It reminded me of why I serve young people with the gifts I’ve been given.
